Pastoral Supervision
The purpose of Pastoral Supervision is for clergy and church workers to spend regular time reflecting on their ministry with the support of a trained professional. Taking an hour per month to debrief, plan and strategize with a particular focus on their work is an excellent way to ensure a ministry worker’s own well-being, as well as best practice for their ministry, and indirectly blesses those whom the ministry worker seeks to serve.
Please see below for a list of recommended pastoral supervisors. All the supervisors listed are trained and accredited as professional/pastoral supervisors, and have professional indemnity insurance for their supervisory work.
You may wish to select a supervisor who is not on this list. A few tips for choosing a pastoral supervisor:
- Check they are trained and accredited with a professional body, and have professional indemnity insurance.
- It is not usually recommended that you engage a supervisor whom you know as a friend or have an existing working relationship with. If possible choose someone who does not belong to the same church as you do.
- Look for ‘fit’– someone who you feel comfortable with. You should get a sense that your supervisor will support you by listening more than they talk, understanding and encouraging you in your ministry, and also occasionally challenging you. A first session will allow you to explore whether the fit is good without committing you to further sessions.
